a little about Mes Amis...

Mes Amis was founded in 2010 when rhythm guitarist Toby Tyler was referred to Steve for lessons. The two became fast friends, lessons quickly became rehearsals, and before long they were looking for a bassist to round out a trio and begin performing. And of course then they had to find a name.

There were many possibilities, some predictable, some silly, some wildly inappropriate...but when Steve’s wife Nadine suggested “Mes Amis,” everyone knew it was a perfect fit. French for "my friends," the name alludes both to the origins of the style as well as the nature of the group, which is good friends getting together to make great music.

The band's debut CD Tomorrow Is Another Day was released in 2013. The album has thirteen songs, including seven of Steve’s originals, with Toby Tyler on rhythm guitar and longtime Dave Mallett sideman Mike Burd on bass. The CD also prominently features some Getz-esque tenor sax from another of Steve’s friends, the incomparable Lefty McAuslin. The band’s current bassist Wells Gordon is also featured on several tunes, using his bow with memorable effect. And last but certainly not least, Toby’s wife Pam Tyler’s voice is evocative and haunting on the closing number Autumn Leaves.

Thanks to Wells Gordon, on May 8, 2014 the band got the chance to record live in the Bangor studio of MPBN for the radio program Jazz Tonight with Rich Tozier. This performance featured Steve and Toby on guitar along with Wells on bass and Shane Ellis on clarinet and soprano sax. It was aired on Sunday night, July 27, 2014 and as of right now can still be streamed from the MPBN website HERE.

Sadly, rhythm guitarist Toby Tyler never heard the broadcast. He passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 after a heartbreaking battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Pam and their children Travis and Chelsea. Toby’s generosity, his loving spirit, his dedication to the music and his wonderful sense of humor will never be forgotten by those whose lives he touched. Mes Amis is part of his legacy, and we will continue to play the music he loved in his honor.
